UMKC Cybersecurity Camp (FREE)

Sponsored by National Security Agency’s GenCyber program, University of Missouri-Kansas City will offer two one-week camps this July and August. During the online camp rising 9-12th graders will explore the field of cybersecurity through online instruction and lab activities. The participants will learn cybersecurity concepts, ethical hacking, digital forensics and ethics. No previous cybersecurity experience or knowledge is required.

Burns & McDonnel Engineering U Summer Camp

Burns & McDonnell is proud to bring back their free summer camps – Engineering U! This year we will be offering these camps virtually, but we promise to deliver the same kind of content and activities!

  • High school | June 7 - 9 Participants of this three-day camp will engage with engineers, architects and drafters working on real chemical, civil, electrical and mechanical engineering projects. You’ll get to meet summer interns who’ll provide tips for making the successful transition from high school to college. They will also connect you with college admissions professionals who will talk to you about your future education and help to prepare you for your college career.
  • Incoming college freshmen | June 21 - 24 Participants of this four-day session will have the opportunity to engage with engineers, architects and other Burns & McDonnell professionals while working on real projects. They also provide participants with tips for networking, future careers and succeeding in college from their summer interns. Please keep in mind both camps will run from 9 a.m.- Noon. Space is limited and camps fill up quickly!

We will run the camp securely through Microsoft Teams, and will supply the call in numbers in our confirmation emails. Supplies for any activity will be provided at no charge and mailed to participants shortly before camp starts.

Kansas City PBS STEM Video Competition

See your ideas come to life on television! Kansas City PBS seeks students in grades 6-12 to create a script for a how-to video illustrating a science experiment for kids ages 2 to 8. The station will then turn the winning script into a television spot to run on PBS Kids this fall! See this page for some tips and the registration form. Entries are due May 31.

Team Digital 2021 at Kansas City Digital Media Lab

Applications are open for 2021 Team Digital, a summer program at the Kansas City Digital Media Lab designed to help teens pursue their interests and ambitions. The program is a part of The Kansas City Public Library and specifically seeks teens interested in radio or remote controlled technology, video and audio production to help build out programs offered through the lab.

Life and Math Summer Program (virtual)

Taught by a graduate of St. Ignatius Jesuit High School, this summer program will teach advanced math topics in conjunction with life skills. “When will I ever use this in life?” is a popular question in math classes. The Life and Math journey will teach advanced fundamentals for math and develop self-management skills for life.

AI Scholars

AI Scholars inspires curious high school students globally by exposing them to the defining technology of our times: Artificial Intelligence. AI is already present everywhere: in our voice-activated devices, smartphone face recognition systems, and autonomous vehicles. The potential to apply this technology for good is limitless. This program, developed and taught exclusively by a team of alumni and graduate students from Stanford and MIT, provides guidance on initiating AI projects, pursuing AI ventures, and preparing for college. High school students can get a glimpse into the future by connecting online with young professionals at Burns & McDonnell. These professionals will describe their career path and what it took to get where they did. They’ll also discuss a “typical day”, from interacting with clients and co-workers to project work. You’ll have the opportunity to develop networking skills that will help you in finding internships and jobs in the future.

Social Change Internship

This spring, Startland piloted a new 8-week internship that challenged students to create social change. Teams of high school and college students were tasked with working together to create, test, and pitch solutions to social challenges in their communities. Whether you’re passionate about public health, political issues, racial injustice, climate change, or education, our community needs young leaders to help solve these challenges. Students are immersed in the entrepreneurial mindset to create real social change in their community. The next internship will run from June 9 - July 28, 2021. To apply, visit the link below. Students will be matched with entrepreneurs/employers based on career interests and complete a business capstone inclusive of presentation the final week of the internship. Applications are open now and the deadline is May 15th.

Security PS Cyber Apprentice Program

Security PS is a cyber security, penetration testing, consulting company in Kansas City. They have built an apprenticeship program that is intended to engage with high school freshmen through seniors with the goal of placing them in a career as soon as they graduate. Security PS trains the students in network and application penetration testing and then give them opportunities to interview with them as well as other Kansas City area employers to start their career. The goal is to get commitment from an employer between their sophomore and junior year, and then provide on the job training so they are ready to start full-time as soon as they graduate. Missouri STEM Signing Day

Details

  • STEM Signing Day Celebration on April 29, 2021
  • A minimum of 10 Students will receive a $1,000 Scholarship to go towards their college costs
  • Students will sign a letter of intent to pursue a STEM degree program at a Missouri post-secondary institution
  • Students will be recognized for their STEM achievement by state officials, business leaders, coalition members and other special guests

Eligibility & Criteria

  • 2021 Missouri graduating high school students
  • Students interested in pursuing a STEM degree or certificate program at a Missouri 2-year, 4-year or Technical College, Fall 2021
  • Applications will be evaluated on the basis of passion for STEM learning, advancing society through STEM, high school activity involvement and scholarship.
  • Semi-Finalist will be asked to provide a 1-2 minute video on what inspires them to pursue a STEM pathway
  • Application deadline is March 1, 2021. Applications are submitted through the My Scholarship Central portal.

Intent to Invent

If you are a student in grades 4 through 12, you are invited to be an Inventor! As an Inventor you will showcase your big idea at the Kansas City Invention Convention in the spring of 2021 where you will compete for prizes and an invitation to compete in the National Invention Convention via The Henry Ford Museum in Michigan.

You will work with a teacher, coach, or other mentors to prepare for the competition. With their help, you will explore the basics of the invention process and work to identify a problem that needs solving. Then you will design a solution and check that your idea doesn’t already exist. During your process, you will keep an Inventor’s Log to document your work and build a prototype of your invention. Finally, you will present your invention to the our judges and join us for an award ceremony in April to celebrate your achievements!

Climate Action KC is a Missouri nonprofit corporation comprised of leaders from government, industry, nonprofits and the community who are dedicated to reducing emissions and promoting a thriving, climate resilient Kansas City metro region. CAKC supports STEM experiences for KC metro-area students by encouraging their involvement in activities like:

  • Taking specific actions to reduce their own carbon footprint
  • Providing input on a regional climate action plan
  • Developing and providing public outreach and education
  • Planning and attending climate workshops and summits
  • Helping develop equitable climate solutions

YEPKC Internship

YEPKC is a phenomenal summer internship program. Students can apply for the 4-week or 8-week sessions. Compensation is exceptional. Multiple Rockhurst students have been accepted in the past. Kiewit Power Engineering is now accepting high school intern applications for the 2022 LEAD Intern Program. Kiewit’s paid, full-time summer LEAD internship provides challenging and achievable projects that encourage participants to pursue their passion for the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). This program is meant for Kansas City based incoming high school Juniors, Seniors, college Freshman or incoming college Sophomores.The deadline for applications to the LEAD program is January 31, 2020. BioNexus OneHealth Symposium

The One Health Research Symposium: The Future of Health on “biosensors and wearable sensors” will feature research showing the impact it is having in One Health (human, animal, and environmental health) applications. The use of biosensors in One Health applications has significant potential to enhance and accelerate the identification of disease conditions by providing access to real-time data to improve decision-making capabilities.

The event takes place during school hours, but students who register (it’s free) for the event will receive a link with the recording.

Symposium highlights:

The keynote speaker, Dr. Duncan Lascelles from NC State will showcase the challenges, opportunities, and future path forward via wearable and implantable sensors. These sensors offer opportunities to access continuous, real-time data across multiple varied dimensions. Such objective data collected in naturally occurring disease states in companion animals also offers a powerful comparative tool that can be leveraged to accelerate the development of analgesic therapies for human health.

Additionally, on November 17, there will be a Career Panel Discussion with industry professionals from Hill’s Pet Nutrition, Merck Animal Health and Garmin. This will provide engagement opportunities and helpful insights for both students and researchers.

The six-day, five-night residential program will provide high school students the opportunity to explore health care careers while also building a foundation for their transition to college life.

Virtual Internship - Quaranzine Writing

STARTLAND

This is a great opportunity for students to partake in the design process as they will be heavily involved in concept ideation and product execution. If there are students interested in topics such as marketing, digital design, writing/journalism and community engagement- this is for them!

Requirements to apply: Must be a high school student, able to set and meet deadlines and have a desire to cooperate.

Interns will be expected to:

  • Devote 8-10 hours a week to internship project
  • Participate in virtual meetings with STARTLAND team and other interns
  • Recruit students to submit artwork/projects
  • Review and categorize submissions
  • Respond to all applicant communications/requests in a timely manner
  • Help create weekly challenges to engage the public
  • Help promote QuaranZine on social media platforms and by word of mouth

Career Exploration Experiences

KC IMAGINE’s IndustryCamp program is hosting a Digital Media Careers Camp on Thursday, June 18th from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. This is a Zoom online conference that is targeted for students and their parents. The online event will feature breakout sessions led by digital media professionals in eight sectors of the digital media industry:

  1. Digital Content Development
  2. Film Production/Entertainment
  3. Promotion & Advertising
  4. Journalism
  5. Web & Mobile Site Development
  6. Post-Production & Communication Technology
  7. 3D Tech & Special Effects
  8. Video Gaming DigiSTORY will offer two breakout periods for each sector so that participants can learn about careers in at least two of these sectors. KU Engineering Camp

Project Discovery is a week long, intensive learning camp for high school students (entering grades 9-12 in fall 2020). Campers choose from different engineering disciplines and work closely with KU faculty and graduate students as they complete a hands-on project. Held on KU’s Lawrence campus, students will get an up-close view of KU and the School of Engineering classrooms and labs.

Now they are offering a Life Skills webinar series. EVERY student who complete all five sessions will receive a $25 gift card. YEP KC Summer Internship

This program is a hands-on summer internship program for high school students that focuses on entrepreneurial thinking and development through practical experience. The working experience and exposure each student will acquire during their time with YEP KC makes this an internship program unlike any other. Over the past two summers, Rockhurst High School has had 5 students participate in this program. The application process is highly competitive, but compensation is also excellent. You will earn money as a paid intern, but will also earn college scholarship money as well. MO Chamber of Commerce STEM Scholarship (March 1st Deadline)

With start-up funding contributed by The Boeing Company and supported by the Missouri business community, the program offers $1,000 scholarships to a minimum of 10 students to help them pursue their STEM education goals at a 2-year, 4-year or technical college of their choice. The funds are unrestricted to be used for tuition, living expenses, books or technology. High school students graduating in 2020 planning to pursue a STEM program at a 2-year, 4-year or technical college in the Fall of 2020 are eligible to apply. Applications must be submitted by March 1, 2020.

A major youth initiative of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), ACT-SO is an acronym for Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics.
